Drug cheats in sport could benefit ‚for decades‘, scientists find (BBC Sport 06.10)
Convicted dope cheats such as sprinter Justin Gatlin could still be benefiting from having taken banned substances long after their bans have expired. Research by University of Oslo scientists has established that muscles can retain the advantages given by anabolic steroids decades after the point at which they were taken.
Effects of doping could be lifelong, say scientists (Athletics Weekly 07.10)
Dope cheats could be benefitting performance-wise years after they have returned to sport, research has shown. Scientists at the University of Oslo purport to have established for the first time that muscles retain the advantages offered by anabolic steroids, 5 live reported on Tuesday.
WADA waiting for ‚conclusive science‘ that benefits of doping may last for decades (The Herald Scotland 09.10)
It is clearly hard to reach a global consensus on sanctions, but countless organisations suspend offenders for life. Paedophile teachers have employment rights removed; corrupt police and lawyers are sanctioned, doctors and dentists guilty of misconduct are struck off. What makes cheating sportsmen any different?
Dopers are cheating for life, so ban them for life (The Roar 10.10)
Over the years I’ve gone from believing that a four-year ban for first-time doping was needed, to an eight-year ban, and now to a lifetime ban. One strike and you are out.
Hier die angesprochene Studie von Wissenschaftlern der Universität Oslo:
A cellular memory mechanism aids overload hypertrophy in muscle long after an episodic exposure to anabolic steroids (The Journal of Physiology 10/2013)
Our data suggest that previous strength training might be beneficial later in life, and that a brief exposure to anabolic steroids might have long lasting performance-enhancing effects.
Our findings might have consequences for the exclusion time of doping offenders. Since the ability to generate new myonuclei is impaired in the elderly our data also invites speculation that it might be beneficial to perform strength training when young in order to benefit in senescence.
Scientists from the University of Oslo (UiO) have demonstrated that even a brief intake of anabolic steroids may have long lasting performance enhancing effects. – If the biological mechanisms in humans are similar to the ones we find in mice, the effects could last for decades, says professor Kristian Gundersen.

.@richardmoore73 EPO results in long term change to muscle fiber type, angiogenesis and may even cause cognitive changes. Should be life ban

Implication is that these drugs (steroids & EPO) should receive life bans. No argument from me, provided legal system can support science
